AQL (Acceptable Quality Level) inspection is the international standard for quality control in garment manufacturing. Understanding AQL helps you specify your quality requirements clearly and evaluate manufacturer quality claims accurately. Here is the complete guide.
AQL defines the maximum number of defective units in a sample that is considered acceptable. It is based on statistical sampling theory and is defined in ISO 2859-1 (formerly MIL-STD-1916). AQL inspection is used by garment buyers worldwide to verify quality before shipment.
AQL 1.5: The strictest level. Used for premium brands and luxury goods. Allows maximum 1.5% defective rate. AQL 2.5: The standard level for most garment buyers. Allows maximum 2.5% defective rate. AQL 4.0: Used for promotional and budget products. Allows maximum 4.0% defective rate. Most international brands specify AQL 2.5 for major defects and AQL 4.0 for minor defects.
The inspector selects a random sample from the production batch based on the AQL table. For example, for a shipment of 1,000 pieces at AQL 2.5, the inspector would check 80 pieces. If more than 5 defective pieces are found, the shipment fails. The buyer then has the option to reject the shipment, request 100% inspection, or negotiate a price reduction.
Critical defects: Safety hazards or legal violations (e.g., sharp metal, toxic dye). Zero tolerance — any critical defect fails the inspection. Major defects: Defects that affect the function or appearance significantly (e.g., wrong size, broken seam, colour variation). Minor defects: Small cosmetic issues that do not affect function (e.g., small thread end, minor stain). Different AQL levels are typically specified for each defect category.
Include in your purchase order: AQL level for critical defects (e.g., 0 — zero tolerance), AQL level for major defects (e.g., 2.5), AQL level for minor defects (e.g., 4.0), and whether you require a third-party inspection or will accept the manufacturer's in-house inspection report.
